Apple’s G5 lives on
You’d think that Apple’s PowerMac G5 was dead and gone. Afterall the MacPro has been out for almost two years now. But if for some reason you still wish to run PPC chips (arguably they are still faster then Intel chips,) then you can buy the YDL Power Station from TerraSoft Solutions.
Using IBM’s PowerPC 970MP processor and the CPC945 North Bridge Chip provides enough bandwidth to use the Quad processors. The rest of the machine is built using open source hardware such as Slimline Open Firmware, and software like Yellow Dog Linux as much as possible. Spec wise it matches 2.5ghz G5′s pretty well, being a fairly compatible machine.
Surprisingly the starting cost is manageable at just under $1900. The only question is, does the machine run Tiger? They can’t come out and say it but reading the specs I’m betting it would…
