Organic LEDs

Not your typical old LEDs, Organic LED’s promise to revolutionize the lighting industry. GE has taken the next step and figured out how to make them just like newspapers – in a roll to roll process, essentially printing them out.

The technology behind OLEDs is still a bit vague, using an “Organic Compund” which I assume is probably either a genetically engineered Light-Emitting Bacteria or a substance based off them. But it promises solve several problems we are currently experiencing.

First the typical household light bulb is incredibly inefficent. They give off tons of extra heat for the amount of energy they consume. Compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CF light bulbs are much more efficent then regular bulbs. It’s true they contain trace amounts of Mercury which is pretty bad for the environment in general no matter how little there really is.

But LEDs are becoming more efficient on a daily basis. Making them out of Organic materials will hopefully increase that in the long run, PLUS make them incredibly environmentally friendly, and even better make them cheap to produce and use. All around they promise to be a pretty good advance in technology.
