Who’s afraid of the big bad iPhone? Everyone!
No, the iPhone isn’t going to take over the world, but it still has the other guys running scared. Coinciding with today’s announcement that Asia is finally going to see the iPhone we get two other announcements that are interesting in their own way.
High Tech Computer in Taiwan has released the Touch Diamond, touted by many as an iPhone competitor even though the company has been careful to not use those words. The phone itself looks cool, and has a lot of features that are expected in the next generation iPhone. But there is no real info about how it interfaces with the computer, or how easy it is to use.
But lets not forget Research in Motion, makers of the Blackberry which is aimed at business users, announced the Bold. Aimed at “younger business users” it includes the ability to download MP3s from iTunes. Coupled with their recent investment of $150 million to fund future Blackberry developers (which is on the heals of Apple’s own $100 million investment,) and you begin to see that RIM *IS* scared of where the iPhone is going.
The real phone news was MIT students exploring the usefulness of phone based on Google’s Android software. Like computers the phone hardware is becoming obsolete and unimportant. The software and how it interacts with other machines is the wave of the future.
