Why I like Macs: A short rave
More often then not I’m asked specifically why I like Macs. Until recently I didn’t have an answer as I just did. Thinking about it though I realized that I feel into OS X completely by accident. Unlike other operating system transitions such as my move from Dos to Windows 95, Windows 98 to FreeBSD, FreeBSD to Windows 2000, I never made a conscious decision to become a Mac user. I did volunteer to become a Mac support technician though, which I feel is completely different.
But the real question is, how did this transition happen? And how did it happen so subtly that I did not notice?
Personally, I think it started with the GUI. OS X’s GUI just works. It’s designed well. Buttons and options feel like they’re laid out in logical places. The learning curve was extremely short. Some of the sub menus could use help or make more sense. Network Preferences is one of them, and has been improved heavily in Leopard. My original problems with the GUI still stand.
But my hatred of those things is much less then the frustration I get when playing with Windows. As the Mac became an actual pleasure to use (and remains so) I can see where I started moving all my work needs to it and relying on it for day to day things.
The second reason I started using Mac… is that it rarely crashes. Windows – even my home made custom built machine with high end parts, crashes. Even unconnected to the Internet and freshly imaged I still feel that the machine is inherently unstable.
So… tell me why you like (or hate) OSX and how you started using it on a daily basis.
