How To make the US a dictatorship in ten easy steps
I like conspiracy theories and hoaxes as the next guy. I try not to believe them, but some items really make me wonder.
Letting the FBI engage in warrant-less spying on Americans is one of those items.
1.) Create an enemy. 9/11 did this admirably, even more so if you believe it might have been engineered by the President himself. Start an illegal and expensive war to deflect attention.
2.) Create a prison for the enemy: Extra Points for not following the law and claiming it has no need to do so!
3.) Create a thug caste: done and done. Although they might be doing this on their own.
4.) Spy on your citizens: Working on it.
5.) Make the right to gather illegal: Free Speech Zones are a good start.
6.) Engage in arbitrary detention and searches: No Fly list anyone?
7.) Detain or arrest individuals who are most critical of our eroding liberties: Yep, we got going on now
8.) Control the press: Ahh… Fox News does just fine.
9.)If you’re not with us, you’re against us: Remember the Republicans calling the Democtrats unpatriotic for not voting to go to war in Iraq, or worse yet, continuing to not support the war?
10.) Suspend fundamental rules of law: Habeas corpus has been suspended. More are coming. It’s only a matter of time
Bonus: Steal the Presidential elections!
I’m loathe to say that Bush is following the history of the Nazi Party pretty closely. But the alternative is that Bush is simply the stupidest and most incompetent President ever. Or he’s the most clever ever and is helping all his buddies rake in. Either way, the US is on the short bus to Hell.
