United States funds Terrorism

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock…. well, in this case even if you have been hiding under a rock, you know that parts of Pakistan are heavily infested with ex-Taliban and Al Queda dudes.

But now we know that Pakistan’s spy agency the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency has close ties to these upstanding gentlemen. Ironically I don’t really think that this is quite the revelation the news wants it to be. It’s been obvious for some time that Pakistan is indirectly supporting terrorism. They do have some what of a good reason to do so. They see the current terrorists as a potential buffer against Indian aggression.

Here’s where I get a bit pissy about this. We’ve been giving money to Pakistan for quite some time already. Instead of being used to stimulate their economy and fight terrorism, it’s been used to build up their anti-Indian defense forces. And people want to give them more, no strings attached!

I see the need to give money to Pakistan, although I think it would do a lot more good here in the United States. But giving it to them without any kind of concession on it’s use, backed up with threats of pulling future funding totally is beyond idiotic. I can see Pakistan’s view too. Until recently they really didn’t have much of a problem with the Terrorists in their country, their continued animosity towards India loomed as a larger threat. But with their recent troubles, and even the potential succession of Terrorist harboring parts of their country I bet they’re wishing they had spent the money like the US wanted in the first place.

Perhaps it would make more sense to tie Pakistan economically closer to the United States. What goods does the country produce that Americans (and Europe) would be willing to pay for? If something could be identified, and supply chains setup, I’m sure Pakistan would end up being a lot more unfriendly to Terrorist groups then they are now. This 1.5 Billion dollars would go a long ways towards doing this, plus it would have the added benefit of helping common citizens and boosting the countries over all economy.

But instead, we’ll just give them a blank check. Good luck kids, sorry my Generation screwed up the world (more).
