Today’s big news is that Obama has set new Fuel Economy Standards with the blessing of California and the Auto Manufacturers who normally can’t agree on anything.
But 39 mpg for cars and 30 mpg for light trucks seems a little low to me. Ok, very low. My 1995 luxury sedan is only a couple miles per a gallon off those standards right now, and with some after market parts I could hit those numbers easily. On top of that, 2016 still seems a long ways down the road, especially to get these cars into the secondary market, or get them to be cheap enough for the poorer portion of the population to purchase. I’ve been thinking of getting a hybrid myself, but just can not afford it at todays prices. Add in the inevitable price increase in oil as the oil speculators keep going (still unregulated) and the poor are simply screwed.
Cars should get 50 or 60 miles per a gallon. They should be solar powered, electrical affairs. Gas is rapidly becoming the wave of the past. If Obama wants to make real change, then he should ram them through, not compromise. Nationalize GM, get rid of the management there, then charge the company to build vehicles that will meet these requirements and be affordable. That would be real leadership.
Not a mere 39 miles per a gallon.
